The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) submitted comments on the U.S. Department of Education’s Proposed Supplemental Priorities addressing the harmful mischaracterization of social and emotional learning. In our comments, we underscored the role of social and emotional learning as a nonpartisan, evidence-based strategy essential to improving literacy, supporting student well-being, and promoting long-term academic success.
CASEL is joined by a broad coalition of organizations as well as grassroots voices who submitted their own comments affirming the importance of social and emotional learning to students’ academic success and well-being. As of the Federal Register notice deadline, 23% or 372 comments (out of 1,500 submissions) expressed support for social and emotional learning. We are encouraged to see a strong showing of support for students’ social and emotional development and will continue to advocate for social and emotional learning as a foundational element of a high-quality education.
