Ratings Framework

In the Guide we present ratings of CASEL SELect programs in two separate tables, one set for preschool programs and another for elementary school programs. In addition, users can view a one-page description of any given CASEL SELect program with specific data on that program.

The tables incorporate a standard set of symbols. An empty circle indicates a minimal level of a particular element. A half circle indicates an adequate level. A full circle indicates that the element can be found extensively in the program.

Program Design and Implementation Support

These tables provide information about seven topics:

(1) Grade range covered

(2) Availability of a grade-by-grade sequence

(3) Average number of sessions per year

(4) Classroom approaches to teaching SEL

(5) Opportunities to practice social and emotional skills

(6) Contexts that promote and reinforce SEL

(7) Assessment tools

Evidence of Effectiveness

These tables present information and ratings on four topics:

(1)  Grade range covered by the research study

(2)  Characteristics of research sample — geographic locations (urban, suburban, rural), student race-ethnicity, and percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunches

(3)  Study design — whether there were quasi-experimental or randomized control trials

(4)  Evaluation outcomes— a SELect program had to demonstrate a positive impact in at least one of four domains:

1. Improved academic performance
2. Improved positive social behaviors
3. Reduced conduct problems
4. Reduced emotional distress
