  • Austin’s Experience Using Multiple Measures of SEL

    By Lindsay Lamb, Program Evaluation Coordinator, Austin Independent School District   Measures of students’ SEL competence can be used alongside other data to support decisions around program implementation. Currently, the Austin Independent School District’s (AISD) Department of Research and Evaluation (DRE) uses multiple measures to assess effective SEL implementation, including an SEL Implementation Survey; AISD Student Climate Survey; Teaching Empowering, Leading, Learning (TELL) AISD Staff Climate Survey; Family Survey; PK-6th grade students’ personal development skills (report card ratings); and academic performance, attendance, and discipline data.   • Council Bluffs Community School District Uses SEL Assessment to Facilitate Conversations with Students

    Council Bluffs Community School District in Council Bluffs, Iowa, serves 9,000 students. In September 2017, they began using the Panorama student survey and teacher measure in their 6th- to 12th-grade classrooms. It is administered digitally during their advisement period and takes about 20 minutes. The developer collects the data and provides reports with grade-, school- and district-level trends.     Invitation to Practitioners: We need YOU! We are working hard to create a guide that can help practitioners select useful social and emotional learning assessments. But we are not practitioners and need your help.  The Practical Assessment Guide is designed to help clarify different purposes of assessment and discuss whether specific tools are useful in these ways as well as show how practitioners are already using them in real life settings.  We plan to release the online Guide in January.
