At a time when educators are trying to build family and community engagement with the most effective strategies and policies, the Handbook for Family and Community Engagement provides a valuable resource. This Department of Education-funded publication brings together the best research and practice about the coordinated efforts of schools and communities to support children’s development intellectually, socially, and emotionally.
CASEL has contributed to this guidebook with a short chapter, “Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning: Complementary Goals for School-Family Partnerships.” It is a strong recommendation for the partnership of schools and families to support children’s social and emotional competence, which is fundamental to student success. Specific ways to do this are highlighted, along with the research base that underpins the recommendations.
